You Need To Have A Day Of Rest

Let us remember to care for ourselves in the midst of our busy days. We are all accountable to ourselves at the end of the day. Let’s not put off our own well being for frivolities, but instead nurture the lives God has given us as we seek to glorify him.

” Do you set a day aside to rest?” Alice’s counselor asked.
Alice admitted to her counselor that she was overextended in her career. She felt that she was neglecting her husband and family, and with each passing Sunday, she felt more distant from God.
” I’m trying to do a thousand things, and I’m not doing any one of them well. I’m so tired, said Alice.”

This was a common complaint of many women who sought the counselor’s advice. The demands made by families and careers are enormous and a number of them feel overwhelmed by their lives. Though each woman would have to decide on her priorities for time management, the counselor always asked this question; ” Do you set aside time to rest and a day to worship?”

Nearly every answer included going to church, but other than that, not many have a clear understanding of what it means to restfully. That’s where the counselor could help.

You see, when God finished creation, “He blessed the seventh day and declared it holy. For on it he rested from all his work of creation” (Gen 2:3). This began the Sabbath; a time so important that God includes it in the Ten Commandments. If the day of rest isn’t important, God wouldn’t have rested nor include it in the Ten Commandments.

God knows our tendency to crowd our lives, putting work and other activities before rest and spiritual refreshments. Historically, the Sabbath is Saturday, but most Christians now rest and worship on Sunday. How do you find time to rest?

Tips To Finding Time To Rest
Here are some tips to finding those rare quiet moments in a busy day:

. Prioritize your activities early

. Take 10 minutes out of your day to turn off the telephone ringer and spend time alone with yourself and God. Taking your concerns and needs to him as you listen and talk to him in prayers.

. Keep away from any toxic friend or relationship.

. Take some time out to reminisce on the beauty of God’s creation that surrounds you instead of murmuring and complaining.

. Be prepared to say no to an extra task or event in order to keep your quiet moments with yourself and with the Lord.

. Encourage loved ones to establish a quiet time for yourself and for themselves too.

. Carry a pocket Bible in your purse and read a verse or two when you get overwhelmed with life’s challenges.

I encourage you to set aside 24 hours every seven days to give yourself the downtime your body needs to rest. Are you careful not to miss any housework yet careless with your health? Are you careful to complete all the errands of the house and office yet careless with your hours of rest?

You need to be willing to stop “doing” and focus on “being, ” according to God’s plan. If you fail to do this frustration instead of refreshment will be a reward. And I’m sure you don’t want that. If God could make out time to rest, you should do the same.

“Nurture and take care of your body. Never lose sight of your well-being”
